You don’t have to bust out a ruler or measuring tape to check — all you need is a standard American penny. Flip Honest Abe upside down and stick the penny into the furrow of the tread. If the tread doesn’t cover part of Lincoln’s head, then it’s time to invest in a tire change. While the penny method works for all tires, some newer tires have tread wear indicators built right into their rubber. These appear as lines running perpendicular to the tire tread. If you can see more than a few of these indicators, it’s time to make a switch.
